FORT WORTH, TX: The 12th ranked Texas Wesleyan University (17-6, 10-2) men’s basketball game ended a two-game losing skid with a 52-50 win over Paul Quinn College (5-14, 2-10) in the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
Saturday’s game was a tale of two halves as the Rams shot 57% in the first half, but managed just 14 points while shooting 29% in the second half.
The Rams were rolling in the first half, regaining their intensity and storming to an 18-4 lead nine minutes into the game. That advantage swelled to as many as 16-points before the Rams took a 38-23 lead at halftime.
Paul Quinn began its comeback quickly in the second half. The Tigers started the frame with a 7-1 run to make it a single-digit game at 39-30. The lead remained comfortable for the Rams until a three from Paul Quinn’s Jason Burke-Kavros followed by a TWU turnover and a free throw from Trevor Kendrick brought the score to 52-48 with 3:39 on the clock.
The score held at 52-48 heading into the final minute. A TWU turnover followed by a layup from Burke-Kavros cut it to 52-50 with 43 seconds to play. The Tiger’s fouled and Texas Wesleyan missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Paul Quinn the chance to win with a three or send the game to overtime. The Tigers went for the win, but could not get a good look at the basket. Kendrick’s last second shot was off the mark and the Rams came away with a 52-50 win.
Terrell Henry and Jeremy Smith each scored 10 points for the Rams. Jeremy Mayfield finished with eight points and 12 rebounds. Burke-Kavros (21 points, 9 rebounds) and Kendrick (13 points) carried the load for Paul Quinn.
The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they travel to Muskogee, OK, to take on Bacone College. That game, the first of a three-game road swing, is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start. |
