FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-6, 8-2 RRAC) handled conference opponent Texas College (5-15, 1-10 RRAC) on Thursday night at the Sid Richardson Center. The Lady Rams defeated the Lady Steers 86-73 on “Think Pink” night in support of breast cancer awareness.
Both teams got off to a rocky start in the initial minutes of the ball game, and the Lady Steers were the first to climb out to an 8-2 lead with 17:02 left in the first half on a jumper from Keyara Criner.
The Lady Rams made a quick comeback and took an 11-10 lead with 14:08 left on the clock as Ashley Davis sliced her way through the lane for a layup.
The Lady Rams maintained that lead throughout the rest of the first half, and led by as many as 19 points. The Lady Rams got on a roll and went on an 18-3 run to finish the first half and went into the break up 48-30.
The Lady Rams continued to build their lead through the first part of the second half, and with a floater by Eliana Mijangos with 16:23 left in the game, they stretched the lead to 29-points at 62-33.
The Lady Steers then mounted an unbelievable 27-1 comeback that brought them within one point of the Lady Rams at 63-62 with 8:28 left in the ball game. The Lady Rams had no answer for Texas College’s full-court press as the Lady Rams scored one point in a six minute span.
The Lady Rams never gave up the lead despite the mishap, and with a layup from Brittany Lewis, found themselves back out to a 79-68 lead with 2:45 left in the contest. Texas Wesleyan held off the Lady Seers and came away with an 86-73 home court conference win.
Andria Mitchell led the Lady Rams with a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds despite leaving the game in the second half with an ankle injury. Brittany White also had a double-double in the contest with 17 points and 10 boards. Davis was good for 16 points, five boards, and five assists. Tiffany Adair finished with 11 points and nine rebounds and Alexander notched nine points and seven assists in the win.
The Lady Rams get back to work as they take on Paul Quinn College on Saturday, February 6. That game scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center. |
