SAN ANTONIO, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-6, 8-2 RRAC) took a thrilling 78-76 overtime win at Our Lady of the Lake University (9-11, 5-5) on Saturday.
The Lady Rams hit on each of their first five shots to jump ahead 11-3. The Saints chipped away at that lead and took their only lead of the half at 17-16 on a three-pointer from Stacey Darnley. The Rams answered with a trey from Keona Ray, and pushed their advantage to as many as six points on the way to a 40-35 edge at the half.
The second half saw six tie scores and eight lead changes as neither team enjoyed a lead of greater than five points. OLLU’s Alisha Crump converted a put-back to tie the game at 66-66 with 1:18 on the clock. That proved to be the final bucket of the period, and the game went to overtime.
Texas Wesleyan started the overtime period with buckets from Ashley Davis, Tiffany Adair, and Brittany Lewis to take a commanding 72-66 advantage. The Saints cut that margin to two points at 72-70 before the team’s began trading buckets. With 23 seconds on the clock, Krystal Manning hit a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game at 76-75. Ashley Davis then hit a pair at the line with 14 seconds to play. With one second on the clock and a three-point lead the Rams fouled Manning before she could get a shot off. Manning hit one-of-two at the line to account for the 78-76 final score.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Saints 46%-36% and led 49-45 in rebounds.
Davis led all scorers with 23 points to go with eight rebounds. Adair added 13 points to the Lady Rams’ win. Manning led OLLU with 18 points, while Crump finished with a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they host Texas College. That game will be featured as Think Pink day at Texas Wesleyan. Fans are invited to wear pink to the game in support of the fight against breast cancer. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start. |
