FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (9-5, 5-1 RRAC) took a convincing win over conference opponent University of the Southwest (4-11, 1-4 RRAC) at the Sid Richardson Center Monday night
The Lady Rams came out running as Ashley Davis and Tiffany Adair set the tone with a pair of layups each to give the Lady Rams an early 8-2 lead two and half minutes in.
Wesleyan kept the pressure on the Lady Mustangs with a 12-0 run midway through the first half and bounced out to a 33-11 lead with 6:32 left in the first half.
The Lady Rams found themselves in foul trouble late in the first half which kept the Lady Ram lead at 20 through the rest of the half, and the Lady Rams rested on a 47-26 halftime lead.
The second half was much of the same from the Lady Rams as they blew the doors wide open scoring seemingly at will. The Lady Rams led by as many as 30 points in the second half as a layup from Brittany White gave Wesleyan an 80-50 lead with 5:51 left in the game. The Lady Rams went on to take a 92-66 win in dominating fashion.
“We came out focused, and I really liked our overall hustle,” said head coach Stacy Francis about her team’s stellar performance. “I’m proud of our team for bouncing back after a tough loss last week.”
The Lady Rams finished the game statistically leading in every category except free throw percentage. The Lady Rams won the points in the paint battle 28-10, points off turnovers 16-3, second chance points 12-2, fast break points 14-2, and scoring off the bench 12-2. The Lady Rams finished the game shooting 50.7 percent from the field, 37.5 percent behind the arc, and shot 55.6 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Mustangs shot 40.4 percent from the field, 27.8 percent from three-point territory and 73.1 percent from the charity line.
Eliana Mijangos led the charge for the Lady Rams and was on fire from the three point line. The 5-8 sophomore transfer from San Antonio was 6-for-10 from the field and an impressive 5-for-8 from behind the arc. She finished with 17 points. Davis had 15 points, eight boards and six assists. White put up 15 points and eight rebounds in the win. Adair finished with 12 points.
The Lady Rams continue their home stretch and take on Jarvis Christian on Saturday, January 23. That game scheduled for 5:30 pm in the Sid Richardson Center. |
