TYLER, TX: Texas Wesleyan University’s Kristi Alexander hit a shot with three seconds to play that lifted the Lady Rams women’s basketball team (6-4, 2-0 RRAC) to a 63-62 win at Texas College (4-6, 0-1) on Thursday.
The Lady Rams got back to playing aggressive defense, forcing 23 turnovers that led to 18 points in the first half. With the score tied at 15, Eliana Mijangos gave the Rams some breathing room, hitting a pair of three-pointers. Mijangos hit three three-pointers in the half to send Texas Wesleyan to the locker room with a 28-23 lead.
The Rams opened the second half on a 9-1 run to take control at 37-24. Texas Wesleyan was maintaining a double-figure advantage midway through the period when the Lady Steers came to life. Texas College used a 14-2 run to close the gap to one possession, 48-46, with just over seven minutes to play.
With 3:25 on the clock, Christina Miner’s conventional three-point play gave the Steers their first lead of the half at 57-56. Alexander later got a steal and a fast-break layup to give the Rams a 61-60 lead heading into the final minute. With 17 seconds to play Sequoia Forney hit a jumper to put Texas College back on top. Alexander sank a floater in the middle of the lane to lift Texas Wesleyan to the 63-62 win.
For the game, Texas College outshot Texas Wesleyan 36%-32% and led 54-36 in rebounding. However, the Rams forced 33 turnovers that led to 27 points.
Alexander finished with a game-high 16 points. Mijangos added 14 points and five steals, while Andria Mitchell posted 13 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Rams. Sequoia (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Chardonnay Nelson (11 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles for Texas College
The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Dallas, TX, to take on Paul Quinn College in Red River Athletic Conference action. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start. |
