SHREVEPORT, LA: The 6th ranked LSU-Shreveport men’s basketball team (11-1) completed a season sweep of 14th ranked Texas Wesleyan University (8-4) with a 78-54 win on Sunday.
The Pilots won the previous meeting between the two programs 88-65 in Waxahachie, TX, in November. Sunday’s loss snapped Texas Wesleyan’s eight-game winning streak.
On Sunday, the Pilots used three three-pointers from three different players during a 13-0 run midway through the first period to take control at 30-13. The Rams cut that margin to 33-21, but the Pilots drained two more treys during a 12-4 run that stretched their lead to 45-25. LSUS hit 7-of-9 three-point attempts during the first half and led 49-28 during the break.
The Rams shored up their perimeter defense in the second half, but the damage was done. The Pilots maintained their advantage on their way to the 78-54 win.
LSUS shot 37% from the field, but 39% (9-23) from long range, while the Rams shot 35% from the field and 22% (5-22) from beyond the arc.
Texas Wesleyan newcomer Jamel White scored 12 points while bringing down seven rebounds in his debut with the Rams. Jeremy Smith finished with 12 points and five assists. Brian Wanamaker added seven points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
LSUS’ Jared Stevenson led all scorers with 13 points. Brance Davenport finished with 11 points, while Derrick Parker and Isiah Bazile added 10 points apiece for the Pilots.
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, January 7, when they travel to Tyler, TX, for a Red River Athletic Conference contest with Texas College. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start. |
