TYLER, TX: Texas Wesleyan University's
Alexis Belton notched the program's first individual win while leading the team to a second place finish at UT-Tyler's Al Jones Memorial Golf Tournament at Cascades Golf Club on Tuesday.
The tournament marked the sixth straight top-10 finish for the Lady Rams who are in just their second season of existence. The program has produced three top-five finishes.
Belton now owns the top three individual finishes in program history. The junior from West Monroe, LA, also won the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship in Port St. Lucie, FL, last May.
On Tuesday, Belton shot one-over 73 to finish at 151 for the tournament, two shots ahead of UT-Tyler's Taylor Sloane.
"I'm extremely proud of the direction we are going in," commented head coach Kevin Millikan. "We are seeing a lot of improvement as we go forward. I'm very proud of Alexis winning her first college tourney and the team getting our best finish in program history. We are going to keep getting better."
The Lady Rams shot a second round 309, but UT-Tyler finished at 304 on the day and 615 for the tournament to pull away from the field of nine teams.
Stephanie Kalapach finished 5th in the field of 43 golfers at 157 including a second round card of 74.
Rachel Zastoupil finished 17th at 166.
Deborah Dover tied for 18th (167), and
Stephanie Myers tied for 21st (169) for the Lady Rams.
Texas Wesleyan will return to action October 14-15, when they compete in the Dallas Baptist University Golf Classic at the Golf Club of Dallas.
